Heat
6 Overview:
Crowd: 5,249
Into the last qualifying heat of the 2007 season
and one of the most demanding locations to
visit. With such fervent and committed support for
each team taking part, the stage was set for
a dramatic event. What transpired however, was little
more than sensational...
One of the largest crowds of the year witnessed
some of the most sublime football to be played
on the blue baize and to have a final decided in
such a manner, with it seemingly all over bar
the shouting at the end of the first half, was something
to behold.
The run up to the tournament had seen teams change
more than most, a regrettable by-product
of ensuring 36 players are fit and available to
play. However, despite this the sides that took
to
the carpet were determined to make their mark on
Wembley and in arguably the toughest
group of the series, it was Spurs and Chelsea who
carved out victories to hit the top two spots.
The final itself was pure theatre. Spurs were up
3-1 by the break, after being 3 nil up and cruising.
The Chelsea goal before half time proved a sucker
punch, as they fought back to 3-3, only to
see Clive Wilson score a peach to put the tie beyond
doubt. Or so they thought.
Chelsea, four time regional champions, grabbed a
late equaliser and held their neve in a tense
penalty shoot out to secure their spot in the Grand
Final and a possible place in Masters
Football folklore.
They join Leicester and Forest as one of only three
teams capable of adding to their tally of Masters
crowns but with so much at stake come September
9, the winners of the 2007 Masters
Cup is anyone's guess.
